Entrepreneurship and The Christian Faith - The #1 Misconception

Podcast 12: Faith and Wisdom

The #1 Myth About Entrepreneurship and the Christian Faith

What’s the link between entrepreneurship and the Christian Faith? For me, it starts with debunking the #1 misconception about faith as defined by Jesus in the New Testament. The misconception is that “religious” faith is “blind;” that it’s something you have in spite of there being no evidence.

I’ve been a Christian since 26 years old, and in my experience, this is not consistent with anything I’ve ever heard any Christian profess to believe. I also think it’s the result of blistering ignorance about the linguistic and cultural context of certain Bible verses. Biblical faith is not blind. It sees with the eyes of wisdom and understanding. And it’s this type of faith that makes entrepreneurs — Christian and Secular alike – successful.

Let me explain. Check out what Jesus said in Chapter Four of The Gospel of Mark…

“26 And he said, So is the kingdom of God, as if a man should cast seed into the ground; 27 And should sleep, and rise night and day, and the seed should spring and grow up, he knoweth not how. 28 For the earth bringeth forth fruit of herself; first the blade, then the ear, after that the full corn in the ear. 29 But when the fruit is brought forth, immediately he putteth in the sickle, because the harvest is come.”

Mark 4:26-29

Notice that Jesus is talking about someone who plants seeds and expects them to grow into crops. He does this without knowing how this even happens. Even though he sees no evidence of this growth for weeks. He still nurtures the ground where he planted these seeds, understanding that in time they will become crops and bear fruit. For thousands of years (possibly more) humankind’s basic knowledge of farming helped them to do this over and over.

Entire civilizations were built this way. Likewise, successful businesses can be built the same way. They can be built by believing that the universe operates based on a set of cause and effect principles. The principles can’t care whether we understand them or not. If we align our behaviors with these principles, our actions will bear fruit in time.

But there’s an incubation period between actions and results. During this incubation period, it’s only our knowledge of the link between certain actions and certain results that gives us the hope to keep going until our actions bear fruit.

This is what it means in Hebrews 11: 11 when it says…

“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”

I know. I’ve studied the original languages that the Bible was written in. Sadly, this verse ^ is often misused by hypercritical people who don’t believe in, or even understand, The Bible or the Christian Faith. But those who do understand it will align their actions with the principles of cause and effect, and continue to act in full hope that the results will come in time.
